Bach flower remedies for hairloss in menopause

Updated: Feb 26

I'm thrilled this month to have a guest blogger on how to support your emotions and relieve hair loss. My mum went through this at around the age of 42 and never came out of it emotionally. I'm pleased to say at 77 she still has a good head of hair, and how she dealt with it at the time was with holistic therapies (we didn't know about Bach flowers then). The other thing I clearly remember was how her career stressed her out, and she had an early menopause too around the same age. I'm completely different, full head of hair and still in perimenopause at 50 so you can't always look to your mothers experience. I'm pleased to introduce Dr Sonal Singhal with Bach Flower remedies for hairloss in menopause.

When I receive phone calls from women about this I feel a bit helpless. I can help resolve so many symptoms of hormonal change and health but hairloss is a tough one. I know that nutrients have a lot to do with it, hormones and emotions but it's never straightforward as it's going to be a combination of the 3, and whilst it is happening and you can't see an end to it then it is incredibly destressing to experience. I'll hand over to my friend Sonal who tells you her story...

"Have you been experiencing excessive hair loss, frizzy hair, hair thinning or even alopecia lately? Do you believe that our bodies heal themselves naturally but don't know the first steps to making your hair healthy again? It might seem hopeless, but all you require is to find the right set of Bach Flower remedies for you to regenerate and regrow healthy hair on your scalp.

WHAT ARE BACH FLOWER REMEDIES?

Bach Flower remedies are watered-down extracts of flowers of wild plants which are used for the treatment of emotional problems. Dr. Edward Bach, the creator of these gentle remedies, believed that healing negative emotions in an individual helps their body heal itself. In my experience, Bach Flower Essences are the most effective form of healing available. They can be used on people of all genders and ages, without any chance of side effects. MY HAIRLOSS STORY AFTER CHILD BIRTH

Hair is an outward expression of beauty. It’s widely known that having a healthy head of hair can be very important in someone's life. It’s good for your self-esteem, plus you look more attractive. I have experienced this myself – before I had my second daughter, I had straight shiny hair. I had never really cared about my hair until it started to lose its vitality. This was signified by my hair becoming curly and frizzy. Disastrously, when I noticed the similarity between my new curls and those of a friend, the similarity not only fueled the fire of anger inside me but set me off in an unbelievable manner. As my natural hair texture changed, I noticed that it started to become dry, brittle and curly. It was hard for me to get used to these new features.

I approached a dermatologist for my scalp but because my mind and body rejected the idea of applying harmful chemicals on my skin, I had to stop the treatment. I was feeling completely helpless and concerned as I didn't use to have the time to style my hair every morning. I felt like there was nothing I could do. That is until I had a Keratin treatment and found myself with painful bumps all over my head. Before I had the treatment, my hair would fall out just a little but after the effects of the Keratin came off, it was noticeably worse. I had to conclude that chemical treatments and other products only work for a short time, aggravating hair problems in the long term.

WHY CHOOSE BACH FLOWER ESSENCES OVER CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS FOR YOUR HAIR-RELATED ISSUES?

The reason why many of us don't see the results we want with modern medicine is because the practitioners are often not tackling the underlying cause. For example, in my case I realized I had to solve the root cause of my hair loss, which was stress and tension. I used to juggle multiple responsibilities such as motherhood and working while having two little kids myself.

With Bach Flower remedies, I was able to calm myself down and enjoy all the benefits of increased self-confidence and improved health. Bach Flower remedies are natural treatments for many ailments.

They work in two ways: the first is by calming the mind and body so that anxiety does not take over, which improves your mood. The second is by stimulating the body's self-healing abilities, which improves your overall health.

POTENTIAL REASONS FOR HAIR LOSS

As such hair fall is a natural process and normal part of aging, but it can also be triggered prematurely by many factors including stress. Stressful situations like childbirth, surgery, or death in the family are known to cause sudden hair loss. When we're stressed, our adrenal glands produce cortisol hormone which signal to our hair follicles that they should transition out of their growth phase. This leads to hair fall. Other reasons for excessive hair fall include:

  • Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, menopause

  • Hormonal imbalances such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders

  • Genetics

  • Side-effects of certain medications such as Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy

  • Skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis

  • Local exposure to toxins like over use of chemical-based shampoos & other harsh hair-care products

  • Hairstyles that pull on your hair - very tight buns, ponytails, or braids

  • Popular hair treatments such as Keratin, Biotin, etc.

  • Poor diet or poor nutrition could lead to mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Minerals: Iron, Magnesium and vitamins: riboflavin, biotin, folate, and vitamin B12 (ie. vitamin B complex) play a critical role in hair growth [ref].

  • Psychological factors like sadness or depression

  • Diseases including anemia, autoimmune disorders

Top 5 Bach Flower Remedies for Hair Fall Control

“All know that the same disease may have different effects on different people; it is the effects that need treatment because they guide to the real cause.” - Dr. Edward Bach

To best treat an ailment or hair condition using Bach Flower Remedies, it is important to perform a full evaluation so we can understand your personality and emotional needs. Because no two individuals have identical circumstances which means your unique situation contributed to hair loss. Nonetheless, as these remedies are safe and available easily in health stores, you can start using them on your own too. Alternatively, you could consult with a practitioner like me who can create a custom blend of appropriate remedies for you. For example, if you're looking for solutions against stress that are causing premature loss of hair, you would turn to Rescue remedy and Elm.

Here are my favorite 5 Bach Flower essences that I know can help you with your hair fall issue:

1) Scleranthus: This remedy for flowers is known to encourage decisiveness, so it's perfect when your hormone levels need balancing. One of the classic symptoms of this personality is constantly changing one's mind and other possible characteristics would be mood swings (such as from cheerful to depressed).

Hormonal changes happen to everyone and can have dramatic effects on your mood, thoughts and behavior. You may find that you struggle with teenage anxieties, pre-menstrual tension or hormonal changes during pregnancy. Some people also experience postnatal depression soon after a baby is born. And it's not just women who go through this - men experience power surges too!

2) Hornbeam: This remedy is good for mental exhaustion, a lack of desire to face challenges, and other conditions with mental or emotional roots. If you're feeling worn out and tired, this could be the perfect essence to help you return to your full potential.

Dr. Edward Bach, found Hornbeam plant to be very potent tonic, astringent and antibiotic. Due to its stimulating properties, Hornbeam can help reduce hair loss if taken orally, massaged into the scalp or in the form of hair rinse. Various hair supplements (or other products to improve hair) often contain extracts of Hornbeam, which can provide important nutrients for slowing down hair loss and effective hair growth.

3) Olive: Remedy Olive helps to restore well-being after an illness, in particular if you are weak, drained and generally debilitated. Olive state can also result if you are habitually inclined to overdo things and give yourself no time for rest and relaxation.

Use of this remedy may be appropriate when the hair loss is only temporary, such as after a fever or illness, after pregnancy, extreme hair care causing significant damage to hair strands or malnutrition. Olive essence can help expedite the healing process for your body and potentially your hair follicles too.

4) Star of Bethlehem: The function of the Star of Bethlehem is to neutralize both the immediate and delayed effects of shock. Anything that shocks our body, like an injury, burns, surgery or illness can interrupt the hair follicle growth pattern and cause a part of your hair to stop growing or fall out. It doesn’t matter how severe the trauma is, Star of Bethlehem will help to get you back on your feet.

People who suddenly lost their hair can use this remedy, or those who started losing their hair at an unusually young age.

5) Crab Apple: Recognized by all Bach practitioners as the “cleansing or detox” remedy. Crab Apple remedy is often associated with being physically or mentally unclean and self-loathing which manifest usually as skin disorder. This state can be a result of a disease, illness, or may arise out of physical disfigurement.

If you’re finding that your hair loss is having an adverse effect on you, Crab Apple can help you appreciate all your positive qualities and release the feelings of self-disgust. It also helps in treating the underlying infections such as a fungal or bacterial infections leading to thinning or balding hair. In addition, the remedy can be used as a lotion or added to a bath for treating skin conditions.

A healthy diet, personal hygiene and hair care products are all important for hair growth. Nevertheless, Bach Flowers may be able to remind us to avoid doing more damage and get back on the road to healthier hair quickly. Bach Flower Essence helps clear your mind of unhealthy thoughts and patterns, which can often interfere with the way our body’s function. If you want to change the way your hair looks for good, I recommend using Bach Flower remedies and affirmations. Together they can help you get past any deep-set mindset that you might have.

Beware Menopause-branded supplements

There is very little scientific backing on most of the supplements that are currently flooding the market at present - you are being sold to; you are being promised that this one pill will solve everything. I look at the ingredients and percentages of all supplements that I'm notified about or come across. Do not believe any menopause expert endorsement; I don't know who these women are.

The menopause experts that I trust don't endorse any of the products I've looked at. Some supplements will help with some symptoms; it's better if the supplement is targeted to a small set of symptoms that are linked; it's more likely to be effective.  They can be a good starting place but over time will become less effective; don't be disheartened it's likely that they don't have enough dosage in for what you now need. I have a Starter Supplement Guide that  explains what you need and why you need it i effective levels to help relieve your symptoms naturally.
