WOMEN LAP UP ESSENTIAL OIL CREAM THANKS TO PHARMACOGNOSY
April 7th 2020
Just as dogs sniff out and lick natural oils as medicine - known as pharmacognosy - Gloucestershire shiatsu practitioner Andrea Marsh has discovered women in the menopause can too.
Her essential oil-packed Blossom Cream is proving so appealing to women with symptoms of menopause that some actually want to tuck into it. “Some women go crazy for the cream saying they want to eat it,” says Andrea. “Others think it smells like a luxurious spa and it immediately relaxes them.
"It seems that just as with the dogs, if women sniff the molecules emitted by the essential oils their bodies need, it can have a positive impact on how they feel.”
Andrea’s discovery came after she took a course in canine pharmacognosy – the study of plants and other natural products for use as ‘drugs.’ The course was to support Andrea’s work as a qualified shiatsu practitioner for both humans and dogs – but the principle behind canine pharmacognosy set her thinking.
“If it works for dogs I wondered if it could work for women too,” she said. “I was already treating clients for menopause symptoms using shiatsu and Chinese Medicine and I knew certain essential oils could help ease hot flushes, anxiety, night sweats and lift your mood.”
As Andrea knew nothing about developing lotions but wanted an organic skincare product, she contacted a woman who did – Carol Aplin of Pink and Green Skincare.
That was two years ago and now Blossom Cream, a certified, hand-made product, packed with a range of organic essential oils is being snapped up by woman as far afield as Australia – and is receiving impressive reviews.
Inhaling the oil molecules taps into our limbic system – the part of our brain that processes emotions, memories and arousal – and begins to calm or uplift - even before the cream has been applied. “Once applied to the wrists and/or temples it helps cool down a hot flash,” says Andrea. “Depending on what symptoms a woman has the supporting oil goes to work to help remedy the issue. Women have reported feeling much calmer, more positive, sleeping better, being less irritable and less emotional,” she said.
“It’s absolutely fascinating how we can naturally take what we need from the cream. If your hormones are reasonably balanced the chances are you won’t like the smell of it, meaning your body doesn’t need it. However, if you do love the smell and you get an overwhelming urge to sniff it or eat it – that’s your body craving its ingredients, so you probably need it,” says Andrea.
Blossom Cream comes in a sleek, shiny silver pump-action plastic, recyclable bottle that fits easily into a handbag or evening bag, making it just another addition to those everyday ‘essentials’ that you can’t leave home without.
Hand-made in Wiltshire, Blossom Cream is a certified product, using a blend of specific blend of essential oils with organic ingredients for a luxurious moisturising cream.
It has no parabens, sulphates, petro-chemicals, artificial fragrances, colours, additives or animal-based ingredients. It is not tested on animals and is suitable for vegans.

"The cream is brilliant!!!
I have one in my bag for work and one at home. I take a deep sniff when I feel a hot flush coming on and then put a bit onto my pulse points on my wrists, and I don’t even notice I am cooling down, it just naturally happens. I haven’t taken any Sage tablets as I don’t need them. Plus it smells wonderful!!
